Native Plants and Food Institute: Cultural Ecosystems: Camas Prairies & Food Forests

May 8, 2026 9:30am-4:00pm

Wolf Haven International 3111 Offut Lake Rd SE Tenino, WA

Learn about ecosystems that Pacific Northwest regional tribes have cultivated since time immemorial with a focus on camas prairies and food forests. Many children grow up thinking that humans are harmful to the land. Through learning about cultural ecosystems, youth see how people can promote biodiversity and well-being through conscientious stewardship. We will explore the concept of cultural ecosystems and how to create micro-ecosystems in school and community gardens and explore a local camas prairie. Participants will receive a curriculum that fits best with grades 6–12 learning levels but can be adapted for younger children to adults.

This training will take place at Wolf Haven International, a wolf sanctuary located on a beautiful camas prairie. We will utilize their indoor classroom and spend most of our time outside; please dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes. We will provide coffee, tea, snacks - please bring your own lunch. This training is facilitated by Mariana Harvey (Yakama), Elise Krohn and Elizabeth Campbell (Spokane/Kalispel).

We have a number of scholarships available with a priority on Indigenous educators. Please fill out this form to inquire about scholarships. For any questions about this workshop, accessibility needs or scholarships, connect with Mariana Harvey at mariana@theoldgrowth.co

For those needing lodging, note that we do not have a room block. We recommend Squaxin Island Tribe’s Little Creek Casino Hotel, they offer discounts to tribal members. We also recommend the Hilton Garden Inn in Olympia.

Tend, Gather, and Grow (Tend) is a K-12 curriculum that focuses on native and naturalized plants of the Pacific Northwest region. Through hands-on activities, students explore themes in wild food traditions, herbal medicine, plant technologies, cultural ecosystems, and tree communities. Northwest Native American plant knowledge and stories are woven throughout the curriculum. Learn more about this toolkit and others at https://www.nativeplantsandfoods.org/

Part of Flowers to the Folks | Hosted by B.A.E. (Black Agricultural Ecosystem)

When: Monday, April 27th, 2026, 4-6:30 PM

Where: CROPS Farm 1980 W Historic Columbia River HwyTroutdale, OR

JOIN US for the continuation of this Dahlia Planting Series. We’ve learned how to supportively dig up and store for the winter season. Come learn next steps of separating and preparing to plant tubers for spring! SIGN UP SHEET HERE

Overview

Hands-on dahlia workshop: divide, plant & propagate for summer blooms. Guided by Marianna of Corolla. All levels welcome.

(*This workshop is sliding scale and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. If you would like to attend but cost is a barrier, please email info@blackoregonlandtrust.org)

This workshop is the third offering in our Cyclical Nature of Dahlias series, a seasonal journey of learning how to grow, tend, and propagate dahlias in rhythm with the land.

As spring awakens, we gather to explore the essential practices that set the foundation for vibrant summer blooms.

Guided by Marianna of Corolla, participants will learn hands-on techniques for working with dahlias in this season of renewal. Together, we will cover:

  • Dividing and splitting dahlia tubers

  • How to assess and work with overwintered tuber clumps

  • Reflecting on storage techniques and sharing learnings from winter

  • When to divide versus when to leave tubers mulched in the ground

  • Planting specifics: timing, spacing, and best practices

  • Taking dahlia cuttings for propagation

This workshop is both practical and relational—an opportunity to deepen your skills while connecting with community and the living cycles of the land.

Whether you joined us for earlier sessions or are stepping in for the first time, you are welcome.

Come ready to get your hands in the soil, ask questions, and tend toward a season of abundance.

There will be food provided at the end of this workshop.

WeABL Community Land Day

Location: Play, Grow, Learn 4530 SE 63rd Ave, Portland, OR

Date: Saturday, February 28th

Time: 10:00-1:00PM

Registration: All Community Land Days are open to the public. Registration is required, and details for each Saturday—including location, activities, and accessibility notes—will be shared in advance. Register through this link.

Description:

Each gathering offers opportunities to:

  • Engage in land-based stewardship and restoration

  • Support Black-led farms and land projects

  • Learn from and alongside Black farmers, land stewards, and organizers

  • Build relationships rooted in reciprocity, accountability, and care

WeABL is hosted in collaboration with Black-led organizations across the Black Agricultural Ecosystem and reflects a shared commitment to land access, food sovereignty, cultural continuity, and collective well-being.

Come as you are. Bring your hands, your presence, and your willingness to be in relationship with the land and each other.

WeABL (We Activate Black Lands) is a month-long, Black-led land tending and community activation series honoring Black History Month through embodied action on the land. Across four Saturdays in February, community members are invited to show up in relationship with Black-led farms and land projects — to tend soil, plant trees, build infrastructure, share stories, and activate living histories of Black land stewardship, resilience, and futurity. Rather than observing Black History Month through abstraction alone, WeABL calls us into relationship, repair, and responsibility — grounding history in the land itself. This series is hosted in collaboration with Black-led organizations across the Black Agricultural Ecosystem and reflects a shared commitment to land access, food sovereignty, and collective care.
